Poel Island & more

Enjoy the Baltic Sea to the fullest – stylish, natural & relaxed

No matter the weather: On Poel, you can experience the sea up close all year round! In summer, head to the beach in flip flops, linen trousers, and a striped shirt, or even in your swimwear. On balmy summer evenings, the sun seemingly sinks into the sea on the horizon – Poel's stunning sunsets enchant not only romantics.

In spring, autumn, and winter, when you're out and about in rubber boots, a knit hat, jeans, and a windbreaker, the refreshing sea air will waft boldly around your nose. The sound of the waves in your ears, the vastness of the sea, and beautiful cloud formations before your eyes – that's pure Baltic Sea feeling and true chill-out pleasure!

Beaches

Whether fine sand or unspoiled, Poel's beaches cater to every taste: The gently sloping beaches in the north, such as Schwarzer Busch and Gollwitz, are particularly popular with families. Children and parents enjoy splashing around in the shallow water, which warms quickly in summer. Lifeguards ensure the safety of bathers at the main beaches.

Separate areas for dog owners and nudists offer plenty of space for swimming, romping, sunbathing, and relaxing.

Cliffs up to twelve meters high create a charming contrast to the flat coastal areas and offer beautiful views on long walks along the beach.

Poel harbors

What would an island be without a harbor? Poel has several. Kirchdorf Harbor is just a five-minute walk from our hotel. A typical maritime atmosphere awaits you there: fishing boats moor at the quay, sailing ships bob on the waves, fish sandwiches beckon, and passenger boats take you on excursions.

Across the street at Niendorf Harbor, you can rent small motorboats (even without a license) and set off on a tour of the protected Kirchsee lake.

The Timmendorf-Strand harbor is located on the west coast of the island of Poel. In the combined pleasure boat and fishing harbor, modern motor and sailing yachts and sturdy fishing boats moor harmoniously side by side. A wide, fine-sand beach is located right next to the harbor. The lighthouse, built in 1871, still guides ships through the sometimes very shallow Bay of Wismar.

Insider tip: Take a seat on one of the terraces of the harbor restaurants in the evening and experience what might be the most romantic sunset on the Baltic Sea!

Natural Eldorado

On the nature reserves of Langenwerder and Walfisch, just off the coast of the island of Poel, wading and waterfowl enjoy excellent living conditions. In spring and late summer, thousands of them rest on the salt marshes and water areas surrounding the islands. Nature hikes and guided tours are offered on Langenwerder during this time.

Island Museum

The local history museum in Kirchdorf takes you on an exciting journey into Poel's past: furnishings and tools document everyday life on the island in the past. Changing art and special exhibitions vividly present other entertaining topics.

Island Church

With its 47-meter-high tower, the island church is Poel's landmark and a landmark visible from afar. It not only gives its hometown, "Kirchdorf," its name, but also remains an impressive example of the Romanesque-Gothic architectural style to this day. Concerts are regularly held in Poel's island church during the summer.
